On May 21, 2013, an EF-5 tornado ripped a 14-mile path through Moore, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City, killing 24 and destroying 12,000 homes. The estimated cost of the damage totaled $2 billion.

Barbara Garcia and her dog Bowser were among those in the tornado’s path. Together, they sheltered in a small interior bathroom of their house, but all at once, the power went out, and Barbara and Bowser were lifted and tossed about as the house was torn to pieces. In just seconds, Barbara’s home of forty-five years was destroyed, and Bowser was missing.

No matter how many times she called, Bowser didn’t appear, and Barbara figured her precious Schnauzer was lost under the rubble.

A Miracle Live On Air

Following the storm, the elderly dog mom spoke with Anna Werner of CBS News in front of what used to be her and Bowser’s home.

“I hollered for my little dog, but he didn’t come, so I know he’s in here somewhere,” Barbara said, gesturing at the wreckage.

As the interview went on, sirens and helicopters could be heard in the background, but it was the cry of someone off-camera that captured attention. Someone had spotted Bowser in the rubble. Barbara went straight to pulling Bowser from the mess to safety there on live national coverage!

“All of the other things…you know, one by one, they can be replaced,” Barbara said. “Much of it wasn’t even important, but I couldn’t replace him.”

Barbara had no insurance, and her home was ruined, but she and Bowser were together. And she knows someone had Their hand on her and Bowser both.

“God spared me, and He spared him. I had a prayer, you know, ‘God, take care of us,” and He did,” Barbara shared.

The Goodness of Others

Seeing this piece on CBS News, Erin DeRuggiero of Minneapolis, MN, felt compelled to help Barbara and Bowser and set up a GoFundMe to help them recover. By the close of the fundraiser, the page received 1,600 donations for a total just shy of $74,000.

“Even though I’ve lost, I’ve gained so much,” she said in a follow-up interview with CBS. “This has shown me how many good, good people are out there.”

Thanks to those good people, Barbara could see her plan of rebuilding her Moore property come to life. By November of that same year, she and Bowser settled into their new home after staying with her daughter since the tornado.

Another Blow, but Hope Lives On

On December 26, 2013, just seven months after the tornado, Erin updated GoFundMe followers with sad news.

“Barbara’s beloved Bowser passed away this morning after having a stroke,” Erin shared. “He had been on medication after the tornado due to fluid build-up in his lungs and had been doing well, despite everything he’d been through.”

Though Bowser was gone, Barbara always carried her love and memories of the good boy. And to honor a remarkable dog, when she adopted a teacup schnauzer six months later, Barbara named her new pup BJ, short for Bowser Junior.

A man has been charged after an elderly woman was killed in a “horrific” dog attack.

Lucille Downer was attacked in April 2021 in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, set upon in her own garden by two American bulldogs. The 85 year-old died of her injuries at the scene.

Nearly two years later Darren Pritchard, 44, has now been charged with being the owner or person in charge of two dogs dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death, police said on Monday. He is due to appear in court on Tuesday.

West Midlands Police said at the time that Ms Downer suffered multiple injuries in the “sustained” attack after the dogs escaped from a neighbouring property through a hole in a fence, with her family saying in a statement that they would “miss her dearly”.

Ms Downer was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. During her working years, she spent time as a cook at Bromford House Care Home in West Bromwich, having moved to the UK from Jamaica in her early 20s.

“Lucille Downer, aged 85, died following injuries sustained from these dogs in her rear garden in Boundary Avenue in Rowley Regis on Friday 2 April 2021”, a spokesperson from West Midlands Police said.

“Although a family member and neighbours rushed to her aid, she was sadly confirmed dead at the scene soon afterwards.

“Darren Pritchard aged 44 from Merrivale Road, Smethwick, will appear before Dudley magistrates on 21 March. He has also been charged with possession with intent to supply and production of cannabis.

“The ownership of two dogs was voluntarily transferred to police at the time of the incident. Following specialist advice it was established the dogs could never be rehomed due to the violent act and they were humanely destroyed.

“Lucille’s family have been informed of the latest development.”

In February 2023, four-year-old Alice Stones was also killed after she was attacked by a dog in her back garden. The pet – which belonged to the family – was “humanely destroyed” at the scene.

Under UK law, owners of dogs that kill someone in an attack can face jail for up to 14 years, an unlimited fine or both. The owners of dogs that injure someone can face up to five years in prison, a fine or both.

The penalty for owning a dog deemed to be “dangerously out of control” can also result in an unlimited fine, a jail sentence of up to six months or both.

Meet adoptable deaf 12 week old cattle dog mix Itty Bit who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish her, make daily positive reinforcement training/socialization/enrichment a priority, get her spayed and always keep her safe.

From her foster: This is Itty Bit, a three-month-old-ish cattle dog mix. She is very affectionate and has a lot of energy. She loves playing with her puppy sisters and with my daughters’ dogs. It’s going to be hard to let her go, but it’s time for her to find her forever home!

We think Itty Bit is probably a double merle — she is deaf, has starburst pupil in her blue right eye, and has the cutest little pink and black spots on her nose and toe beans. I’m guessing she will be around 50 lbs full grown? She is currently in an adorable “one ear up and one ear down” phase. I ran a genetic test on her littermate sister: it said she was 75% cattle dog mixed with German Shepard and chow chow.

I am fostering her and two of her sisters because the woman who owned her mom was getting evicted from her home and wasn’t taking very good care of the puppies. She had to be treated for cryptosporidium when I brought her home, but she is now happy and healthy. She has received her first two rounds of vaccines. She will need the third round (and to be spayed) when she’s a little older.

Itty Bit is a seriously special girl. She would love to find a home with a playful doggy friend who is patient with her little puppy nibbles. Between her intelligence, playfulness, deafness, age, and energy, I really want to find her a home where she will receive great training.

Itty Bit currently lives with me in the town of Menifee in Southern California, which is east/inland of Orange County/LA. We can work together to figure out transportation/travel arrangements.
